Australian investors continue to look to global markets, with new exchange-traded fund (ETF) inflows data showing quarterly industry flows jumped nearly 50% in Q3, from $13.39 billion in Q2 to $20 billion in Q3. Global equities attracted almost half of all new ETF investment.
Investors added $48.4 billion to ASX-listed ETFs over the first nine months of 2026, ending 30 September. Of this, Vanguard saw $16.2 billion in ETF flows over the period, representing more than a third of the total industry flows.
During the third quarter, global equity ETFs received $9.6 billion, almost half of total industry flows, while Australian equity ETFs received $4.2 billion. Together Australian and global equity ETFs received $13.8 billion, representing 69% of ETF inflows.
Daniel Shrimski, Managing Director, Vanguard Asia Pacific said investors were navigating a complex environment.
“Cost-of-living pressures, housing affordability challenges, changing interest-rate expectations and tax reforms are prompting Australians to think carefully about how they build wealth.”
“What’s notable is that investors continue to put money to work. Almost 70% of ETF inflows in the third quarter went into Australian and global equities, suggesting investors are continuing to look beyond short-term uncertainty and focus on longer-term opportunities.”
The trend comes as many Australians assess their finances. Rising living costs and elevated property prices have placed pressure on household budgets, while CGT changes have also brought greater attention to the role of income and capital growth in investing.
Recent Vanguard modelling on the CGT reforms found that while tax outcomes may influence investment decisions, they should not be the primary driver of portfolio construction.
Despite uncertainty, investors have continued allocating capital to growth-oriented assets, particularly broad-market Australian and international equity ETFs.
Vanguard’s Q3 flows reflected strong investor demand across both equities and fixed income. The Vanguard MSCI Index International Shares ETF (VGS) attracted $1.23 billion.
“Many investors recognise that some of the world’s largest and most innovative companies sit outside Australia,” Mr. Shrimski said.
The Vanguard Global Aggregate Bond Index (Hedged) ETF (VBND) attracted $738 million.
“The strong uplift in fixed income ETF flows suggests investors are increasingly recognising the role bonds can play in a diversified portfolio. In current market conditions, higher yields have increased the income potential of high-quality fixed income, while bonds can also provide diversification alongside equity exposure,” Mr. Shrimski said.
